Many professionals spend their entire careers within a single function, building deeper expertise in one field over time. But for Larry Vicente, Certified Management Accountant, career growth came from stepping outside the traditional boundaries of finance.
After more than a decade working in accounting and finance roles, Vicente made a major career move into general management—an experience that reshaped how he viewed business, leadership, and decision-making.
The transition challenged him to expand his perspective beyond financial statements and understand how organizations operate at every level.
A career that began in finance
Like many professionals in the accounting field, Vicente started his career building strong foundations in financial analysis and accounting work. These early roles focused heavily on financial reporting, analytical work, and understanding how financial data supports business decisions.
But after twelve years in the finance profession, he faced an opportunity that would significantly change his career path.
He accepted a role in general management, which required him to take responsibility for broader operational issues across the organization.
The move exposed him to a completely different side of business leadership.
Seeing the business beyond the numbers
The shift into general management allowed Vicente to experience firsthand how decisions affect people, processes, and daily operations.
Instead of focusing solely on financial performance, he found himself dealing with operational inefficiencies, delays, workforce disputes, safety concerns, and other complex challenges that affect business performance.
These experiences helped him develop a deeper understanding of how organizations function as interconnected systems.
For Vicente, the transition was eye-opening.
He began to see how financial results are influenced by operational realities and how leadership decisions shape the performance of teams and departments across the organization.
Learning to think more strategically
Later in his career, Vicente expanded his responsibilities further by working in supply chain operations, where he faced many of the same operational challenges from a different perspective.
The experience strengthened his ability to think strategically and evaluate how decisions affect multiple areas of the business.
To deepen his understanding even further, Vicente pursued an MBA, which broadened his perspective beyond finance and helped him develop a more holistic approach to business leadership.
The combination of finance, operations, and management experience helped him become a stronger decision-maker.
The challenge of stepping outside a comfort zone
Despite the long-term benefits of the transition, Vicente admits that moving beyond finance was not an easy decision.
Taking on responsibilities outside his original field meant learning new operational processes quickly, managing diverse teams, and making decisions that affected day-to-day business performance.
“It was challenging to take on responsibilities that I had limited experience with,” he explains.
At times, the new role felt overwhelming. But the experience ultimately strengthened his confidence, adaptability, and leadership skills.
Vicente credits the support of mentors and colleagues who helped guide him through the transition.
These relationships played an important role in helping him navigate unfamiliar territory and grow as a leader.
Lessons from leading people
Throughout his career, Vicente says one of the most important lessons he learned is that people are the heart of every organization.
Listening carefully, understanding team members, and supporting their growth are essential parts of leadership.
“I’ve learned that listening is as important as directing,” he says.
He also believes adaptability is crucial for leaders who must guide teams through changing environments.
Organizations today often bring together multiple generations in the workplace—from baby boomers to Gen Z—each with different expectations and perspectives.
Effective leaders must be able to navigate these differences with empathy, clear communication, and strategic thinking.
Why career shifts can strengthen leadership
Looking back, Vicente sees his transition into general management as one of the most difficult—but also most valuable—decisions of his career.
The experience pushed him beyond the technical focus of finance and helped him develop a broader understanding of business strategy, operations, and leadership.
Most importantly, it showed him that growth often happens when professionals step outside their comfort zones.
For Vicente, embracing new challenges was ultimately the key to becoming a more capable leader.
The journey reinforced a simple but powerful lesson: sometimes the most important career moves are the ones that require the greatest leap of faith.
