Before Moonleaf, She Was a Preschool Teacher—Then She Built One of the Philippines’ Most Recognizable Milk Tea Brands

Entrepreneurship often begins with people who have spent years preparing in business school, corporate leadership, or finance. But the story of Dawn Sanchez, founder of Moonleaf Tea Shop, took a very different path.

Before she introduced milk tea to the Philippine market and helped build one of the country’s most recognizable beverage brands, Sanchez was working in a completely different field: early childhood education.

“Before starting Moonleaf, I was a preschool teacher,” she says. “Working with children was something I truly enjoyed, and it remains very close to my heart even today.”

At the time, building a café brand was not part of her career plan. Like many entrepreneurs, the idea that would eventually turn into a business came from a personal experience rather than a carefully constructed strategy.

A Discovery That Sparked an Idea

The turning point came during a trip to Taiwan in 2008.

While traveling, Sanchez encountered milk tea for the first time. The drink was already a cultural staple in Taiwan, widely enjoyed by students and young professionals who frequented tea shops for both the beverage and the social experience.

For Sanchez, the discovery immediately raised a question: why wasn’t this available in the Philippines?

“The inspiration came from a trip to Taiwan in 2008, where I had my first experience with milk tea,” she recalls. “At that time, the milk tea business category was virtually nonexistent in the Philippines.”

What she saw was not just a drink but a potential market gap.

“I saw a clear opportunity to introduce something new, an alternative to coffee that could appeal to the youth,” Sanchez says.

At that moment, milk tea had not yet become the booming industry Filipinos know today. There were few, if any, dedicated milk tea brands operating in the country, and the beverage itself was unfamiliar to most consumers.

But Sanchez believed that Filipino tastes—particularly among younger customers—would respond well to the product.

Not a Big Vision—Just One Store

Even with the idea in mind, Sanchez did not initially think of building a large company.

“At the beginning, I wasn’t thinking on that scale,” she says. “Our focus was simply to make our first 16-square-meter store succeed.”

Moonleaf’s first store opened in 2010, a modest shop that reflected the realities of starting a small business with limited capital.

Like many first-time entrepreneurs, Sanchez faced immediate challenges: funding operations, managing inventory, and building systems that could maintain consistent quality.

“Like most startups, capital was a major challenge—funding the store, inventory, and day-to-day operations,” she explains.

The early years required persistence. Beyond simply serving drinks, the team had to build operational discipline from scratch.

“Ensuring consistent product quality, proper training, and excellent customer service required continuous effort and discipline,” Sanchez says.

    Understanding the Filipino Market

One factor that helped Moonleaf gain traction was the openness of Filipino consumers to new food and beverage experiences.

According to Sanchez, Filipino customers are naturally curious, particularly when a product aligns with their taste preferences.

“Filipino consumers are naturally curious and open to trying new things, especially when it aligns with their taste preferences,” she says.

Milk tea offered something different from traditional coffee culture. Its sweetness, customizable flavors, and novelty made it especially appealing to students and young professionals.

“When customers discover something they enjoy, they tend to support it consistently,” Sanchez adds.

As word spread and customers returned, the small tea shop began to attract a loyal following.

    From Teacher to Entrepreneur

Sanchez’s journey highlights an important reality about entrepreneurship: successful founders do not always begin with traditional business backgrounds.

In many cases, they begin with something simpler—a curiosity about a product, a personal passion, or a recognition of an opportunity others have not yet seen.

For Sanchez, the transition from preschool teacher to entrepreneur was not about abandoning her previous career. Instead, it reflected the willingness to explore an idea that she believed could work.

Her background in education may even have shaped her leadership style, emphasizing patience, discipline, and the importance of building systems that support people.

    The Lesson for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Today, Moonleaf has grown into a well-known homegrown brand, with numerous branches and a strong presence in the Philippine café landscape.

Yet Sanchez’s journey carries a lesson that many aspiring entrepreneurs overlook.

You do not need a traditional business résumé to build a successful company.

Sometimes the most valuable starting point is simply the ability to recognize an opportunity—and the courage to try turning it into something real.

For Dawn Sanchez, that opportunity came from a single cup of milk tea discovered abroad.

And what began as curiosity eventually became a business that helped shape an entire industry.
