How Louie Gutierrez Brought His Family’s Jewelry Business Into Manila Retail

Louie Gutierrez, founder of SilverWorks, grew up surrounded by the jewelry trade. His family had been in the business for generations, operating stores that served customers in provincial markets such as Olongapo and nearby areas in Central Luzon. Yet while the family business had deep roots in these locations, Gutierrez would eventually help bring it into a very different environment—the rapidly modernizing retail scene of Metro Manila.

When he returned to the Philippines after completing his studies in gemology in the United States, Gutierrez began thinking about how to apply his training to the family’s operations.

“When I returned to the Philippines, we decided to open stores in Manila,” he recalls.

For decades, the family’s retail activity had been concentrated in provincial cities. Their jewelry stores catered to local communities and tourists, particularly during the years when Olongapo was thriving because of the presence of the U.S. Naval Base. The local economy at that time created a steady flow of customers, including American servicemen and visitors who often purchased jewelry as gifts or souvenirs.

But by the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Philippine retail landscape was changing. Large shopping malls were beginning to reshape consumer behavior. Instead of shopping in traditional street-side stores or small commercial districts, many Filipinos were now spending time in integrated retail environments where shopping, dining, and entertainment were located under one roof.

For retailers, these malls offered new opportunities. High foot traffic, centralized locations, and modern facilities allowed businesses to reach a broader customer base and present their products in more sophisticated settings.

Gutierrez recognized that this shift could create new possibilities for the family’s jewelry business.

“In 1991, we launched our first Ocampo’s Fine Jewelry store in Robinsons Galleria,” he says.

At the time, Robinsons Galleria was among the emerging mall destinations in Metro Manila. Opening a jewelry store there represented a significant step for a family enterprise that had traditionally operated in provincial shop-house environments.

Entering the mall retail space required a different approach to merchandising and customer engagement. Metro Manila consumers had access to a wider variety of brands, including international retailers, which meant local businesses needed to pay greater attention to product presentation, store layout, and branding.

This transition illustrates an important stage in the evolution of many Filipino family businesses. Enterprises that begin in provincial markets often develop strong customer relationships and operational experience. But expansion into Metro Manila exposes them to a larger and more competitive marketplace, encouraging innovation and modernization.

For Gutierrez, the move into Manila malls was not simply about geographic expansion. It also represented an opportunity to rethink how jewelry could be presented and marketed to customers.

Shopping malls offered advantages that traditional storefronts could not easily provide. They delivered consistent foot traffic, provided professionally managed retail spaces, and created environments where customers could browse comfortably. Jewelry, which is often purchased during special occasions or leisure shopping trips, benefited from being located in these lifestyle-oriented spaces.

The decision to establish a presence in a major mall therefore aligned the family’s jewelry business with the direction Philippine retail was heading.

The Robinsons Galleria store became an early step in bridging the gap between the family’s traditional jewelry roots and the modern retail environment emerging in Metro Manila. It demonstrated how a provincial enterprise could adapt to changing consumer habits and position itself within the country’s evolving shopping culture.

Over time, this willingness to embrace modern retail spaces would influence how Gutierrez approached the jewelry business in the years that followed, eventually shaping the direction of the retail concepts he would later develop.
