Why This CFO Thinks Work-Life Balance Is a Myth (And What He Does Instead)

For Mike San Diego, Certified Financial Consultant and CFO of EON Group, the traditional idea of work-life balance is outdated. Instead of trying to draw a perfect line between work and life, he believes in something more sustainable: integration.

“Don’t chase the balance but focus on how to integrate the two,” San Diego told Financial Adviser PH.

It’s a mindset shift that has reshaped how he leads and lives. In his role as CFO, he oversees teams, strategies, and performance goals—but he also understands that people don’t leave their personal lives at the office door. “You can’t expect peak performance from people who are burnt out or disconnected from what matters to them outside of work,” he says.

Rather than enforcing rigid boundaries, San Diego promotes a culture where employee well-being is part of the company’s DNA. That means designing workflows, team norms, and performance systems that consider mental health, flexibility, and personal growth—not as perks, but as strategic priorities.

He applies the same principle to balancing company goals with employee needs. “Management should ensure that employee wellness and well-being are integrated in the day-to-day operations,” he explains. “That way, as we work toward the company’s targets and objectives, we’re not leaving anyone behind.”

To San Diego, the goal isn’t just to make people happy—it’s to create conditions where both the business and the people driving it can win. “WIN-WIN for everyone. Everybody happy,” he says with a smile.

This approach reflects his broader leadership philosophy: people are at the heart of performance. When you build systems that support their well-being, creativity, and purpose, productivity follows naturally.

And for leaders looking to replicate this success, San Diego has one piece of advice: stop seeing work and life as two separate things. Instead, find ways to align them, so they support—not compete with—each other.
