This Simple Habit Can Help You Save Money and Cut Waste—Even When You Shop Online Every Week

Online shopping has become second nature for many Filipinos—especially during and after the pandemic, when mobility restrictions and safety concerns pushed consumers to shift to digital platforms. But while the convenience of e-commerce is undeniable, it also comes with a cost: overspending, waste, and clutter.

According to Genesis Kelly Lontoc, a Registered Financial Planner, one key habit can help online shoppers regain control: tracking your expenses.

“By reviewing expenses, we shall be able to get an idea of what kind of lifestyle we are living and hopefully adjust accordingly,” Lontoc told Financial Adviser PH. “Tracking of consumption patterns helps in making sure that what we order online would be the right amount.”

Whether you’re buying groceries, home essentials, or the latest tech, keeping a record of your purchases can help you spot patterns, control impulse buying, and make better financial decisions. More importantly, it can help you avoid waste—something many shoppers overlook.

Excessive buying can lead to unused items, expired goods, and even duplicated orders. On the other hand, under-ordering can result in delays and added shipping fees. Both scenarios cost money and resources—not just for you, but for the environment, too.

Tracking can be as simple as using a spreadsheet, a budgeting app, or even a notebook. The key is to review your purchases regularly, evaluate whether they align with your needs, and adjust accordingly.

Lontoc also emphasized a broader impact: “Ordering the right amounts online can also help protect the environment as purchases that use items which potentially damage the environment will be lowered.”

The bottom line? It’s not just about the money—it’s about mindful consumption. When you track your spending, you’re not only saving pesos; you’re also contributing to a more sustainable and intentional way of living.

So before you hit “checkout” again, take a moment to check your records. Your wallet—and the planet—will thank you.
