    This HR Leader Combines Old-School Values With AI—and It’s Changing How She Leads

    In a world where HR is rapidly evolving—driven by automation, digital systems, and shifting employee expectations—staying grounded in values has never been more important. Marichu K. Cruz, Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP) and Senior HR Officer II, has made it her mission to lead with integrity, clarity, and heart.

    “I was humbled to receive the ‘Best in Core Values’ award, which reminds me of the importance of leading with Agility, Passion for Excellence, Malasakit, Teamwork, and Innovation,” Cruz told Financial Adviser PH in an exclusive interview.

    These principles aren’t just company slogans—they’re her daily anchors for building trust, guiding teams, and navigating transformation.

    Leadership That Begins With Example

    Rather than command with authority, Cruz leads by modeling the very behaviors she wants her team to embody. Her commitment to open communication and value-aligned leadership sets the tone for how people interact, collaborate, and perform across the company.

    “Leading by example is key to establishing trust and respect within a team,” she said. “It’s vital that employees feel supported and encouraged to voice their ideas, knowing they are valued in the process.”

    “Providing a safe space where people can bring their whole selves to work is essential for both their well-being and our collective success,” she emphasized.

    Her approach combines strong systems with a sense of human warmth—something that sets her apart in the often-rigid world of compliance and corporate structures.

    Tech That Enhances, Not Replaces, the Human Touch

    While the rise of digitized HR processes and AI in recruitment presents exciting opportunities, Cruz is careful to preserve the people-first spirit of her profession. Technology, in her view, must be applied ethically and strategically—always with human oversight.

    “Digitizing HR makes processes more efficient and data-driven,” she explained. “But the challenge is finding the right balance between technology and human connection.”

    Her HR strategy leverages data to inform decisions but never loses sight of the real people behind every metric.

    One of the most powerful shifts in her leadership has been embracing a coaching culture—an approach that emphasizes development over direction, listening over lecturing.

    “Building a coaching culture is exciting because it shifts the focus from traditional management to empowering employees to grow,” Cruz shared. “It’s about creating a supportive environment where feedback and mentoring help people develop.”

    This culture, she adds, begins with leaders who are willing to be vulnerable, teachable, and present.

    As HR continues to transform, Cruz remains focused on what truly matters: cultivating values, elevating people, and embracing change without losing the human core of the work.
