“To stay competitive in a field that is always changing, I focus on learning new things all the time,” says Adrian Fernandez, Certified Tourism Professional, whose career spans nearly 16 years in tourism and hospitality.
“I take classes, read about the latest trends, and keep up with new ideas that can help me improve. This helps me stay current and ready for anything that comes my way.” For him, adaptability is not optional—it’s essential. “I also make sure to stay open to new tools and ideas so I can quickly adjust to changes. By always learning and improving, I make sure I’m prepared for any new challenges that come my way and stay ahead in my career.”
This mindset has defined his professional growth, from starting as a Department of Tourism-accredited regional tour guide to becoming an award-winning leader in the Cordillera region. “Professionals in tourism can future-proof their careers by continually investing in education, training, and technology adoption,” he advises.
“As tourism trends evolve, it’s vital to stay on top of sustainable practices, digital tools for marketing, and new service trends.” He points to his own journey as proof. “My career has benefited from this approach—continuing my studies with an MBA, being actively involved in tourism organizations, and embracing digital marketing strategies.”
He also sees adaptability as more than just responding to change—it’s about anticipating it. “Professionals should be flexible and ready to adapt to shifts in consumer behavior, such as the increased demand for eco-friendly or culturally immersive experiences.”
For Fernandez, skill development goes hand in hand with service excellence. “In everything I do, I always give my best because I am truly passionate and dedicated to my work. I always try to improve and make sure to go above and beyond to provide exceptional service.”
He believes this commitment creates a competitive advantage no technology can replace. “I take pride in being professional, staying focused on the needs of the customer, and being honest and respectful. I am dedicated to going the extra mile to make sure guests are happy and their needs are taken care of.”
The recognition he has earned—including being named Regional Tour Guide of the Year (2024) and Master Regional Tour Guide—is, in his view, the result of this mindset. “Stay positive, keep trying your best, and always remember that when you’re passionate about something and have a clear purpose, you’ll eventually find success.”
For Fernandez, success in tourism is about more than titles—it’s about resilience. “Even when things get tough, keep going and don’t give up. If you work hard, do your best, and believe in yourself, you’ll see the rewards later.”
