In tourism and hospitality, technical skills matter, but they are not enough. What makes the greatest difference, according to industry professionals, is attitude—the ability to maintain a positive outlook, connect with people, and deliver experiences that leave a lasting impression. Soft skills, paired with knowledge and practical ability, are what allow individuals to thrive in this people-centered field.

    From Industry to Academe

Joseph Bingbong Gutierrez embodies this philosophy. After gaining hands-on experience in tourism and hospitality, he made a bold pivot into education, earning his qualifications as a Licensed Professional Teacher and an Accredited TESDA Trainer. The transition was not simply about moving careers—it was about expanding his impact. By entering the academe, Gutierrez found a way to share his experiences with students while also continuing his own professional growth through education and training.

He credits a piece of advice from his dean at La Consolacion University Philippines for shaping his mindset: “Always work with heart, because you can be great if you put your heart into what you do. And always be kind.” Those words became a compass, reminding him that success in hospitality is not just measured by technical knowledge but also by compassion and authenticity.

    Rising Above Challenges

As a young professional stepping into leadership roles, Gutierrez faced one common obstacle: being underestimated because of his age. Rather than letting criticism discourage him, he chose to use it as motivation. Hard work, professionalism, and consistent results eventually silenced doubts and proved his capabilities.

This experience reinforced a belief that resilience is an indispensable trait in hospitality. Technical skills open doors, but resilience ensures professionals can handle the pressure, expectations, and constant changes of the industry. For Gutierrez, perseverance and positivity became just as important as certifications and training.

    Leadership Grounded in Mentorship

Gutierrez believes the best leaders in hospitality are mentors first. For him, leadership is not just about managing operations but about supporting colleagues, encouraging growth, and creating a positive work culture.

Managing conflicts and difficult team members is part of the job, and his approach has always been rooted in fairness. He makes sure to listen to all sides before making decisions and avoids letting emotions interfere with objective judgment. This approach was tested in one of his toughest moments as a leader—choosing to address a conflict between a close friend and other colleagues. Instead of allowing personal ties to sway his judgment, Gutierrez made the call that was fair and right for the team. It was a difficult choice, but it reinforced his commitment to professionalism and integrity.

Over time, his management style evolved into one that is approachable yet firm. He prioritizes creating a work environment where people feel comfortable and valued, while also setting boundaries and maintaining accountability. Balancing empathy with discipline has made him a more effective and respected leader.

Staying Competitive in a Fast-Changing Industry

Hospitality is one of the fastest-evolving industries, and staying competitive requires continuous learning. Gutierrez makes it a point to regularly update his knowledge, pursue certifications, and stay on top of current trends. He has completed multiple TESDA certifications, including NC III and NC IV, which sharpen his technical skills and validate his expertise.

He also encourages professionals to recognize the breadth of opportunities within the industry. Careers can span hotels, airlines, tourism management, and even the academe. By keeping skills current and being open to new opportunities, hospitality professionals can ensure long-term relevance in a dynamic field.

    Growing Through ITHP

For Gutierrez, joining the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Professionals (ITHP) was a milestone in his career journey. Inspired by his mentor, a Certified Hospitality Professional (CHP), he pursued the same path and found in ITHP not just certification but also community.

Through ITHP’s seminars and training sessions, he gained access to industry insights that strengthened his role as Program Chair of a diploma program. The network he built through ITHP also provided valuable collaboration opportunities with other hospitality leaders, enriching both his academic and professional contributions.

    A Message to Aspiring Professionals

When asked what advice he would give to those considering ITHP, Gutierrez is clear: take the leap. For him, certification is not only about strengthening credentials—it is about joining a supportive community of passionate professionals. It is about continuous learning, personal growth, and building a career that goes beyond titles and positions.

In an industry defined by people, resilience, and service, Joseph Bingbong Gutierrez stands as proof that with the right mix of heart and perseverance, it is possible to thrive, inspire, and leave a lasting impact.
