For Sherwin Tan, a Filipino artist known for his soulful paintings and nature-inspired work, the journey to artistic success has been anything but easy. While many admire his growing list of collectors and sold-out exhibitions, few realize the internal battles he’s faced along the way—especially the ones that made him question whether to keep going at all.
In an interview with Financial Adviser PH, Sherwin opened up about the emotional rollercoaster that comes with trying to build a career in art. “Yes, a lot of times there are fear. But until now, I am still here,” he admitted, candidly reflecting on the moments he came closest to quitting.
Unlike traditional careers with clear paths and milestones, art is subjective—and that subjectivity can be brutal. Recognition doesn’t come easily, and neither does validation. “Roadblocks and challenges are indeed inevitable in life. When it comes to art, gaining recognition or acceptance poses its own hurdles,” he shared. The criticism from influential groups or being overlooked by curators and galleries became a test not just of his talent, but of his resilience.
Sherwin also highlighted the emotional toll of trying to “make a name” in a field where the rules are often unspoken and the gatekeepers selective. “Making a name,” he said simply, was the hardest part.
Despite this, what kept him going was a combination of faith, inspiration, and the deep belief in the healing power of his work. “Creating art that uplifts the soul goes beyond mere visual appeal; it offers hope and inspiration to those who encounter it,” he explained.
His advice to aspiring artists who feel stuck? “Never allow anyone to look down on you. Be strong and take courage.” In an industry built on opinions, that kind of inner conviction is what separates those who quit from those who persist.
Sherwin’s story reminds us that success isn’t always about talent alone. Sometimes, it’s about staying when every part of you wants to walk away. Because often, just on the other side of doubt, is the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for.
