For Richard Ibarra, Certified Management Consultant (CMC®), leadership in consulting goes far beyond technical expertise. It requires collaboration, adaptability, and a commitment to helping clients and teams achieve meaningful results.

Over the course of his career, Ibarra has developed a leadership style that emphasizes teamwork and open communication.

“I describe my leadership approach as collaborative and supportive,” he says. “When people feel empowered and respected, they contribute their best ideas and efforts.”

This philosophy has shaped the way he manages consulting engagements and builds relationships with clients.

    Navigating complex consulting challenges

Consulting projects often involve tight deadlines, high expectations, and multiple stakeholders.

For Ibarra, success in these environments requires both structure and flexibility.

“Managing consulting engagements means balancing many moving parts,” he explains. “Clear communication and strong collaboration help teams stay focused even under pressure.”

Throughout his career, he has learned that staying organized and adaptable can make a significant difference when projects encounter unexpected challenges.

One particularly memorable experience involved a billion-peso tax assessment case with the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s National Office.

In this engagement, Ibarra helped guide the client through a complex dispute while ensuring that both the client’s interests and regulatory expectations were properly addressed.

“My role was to help the client understand the documentation required and represent them in discussions with the BIR,” he says.

The case required not only technical tax expertise but also careful stakeholder management and clear communication.

“Situations like this remind you that consulting is not just about technical knowledge—it is also about trust, responsibility, and ethical judgment.”

    Advice for aspiring consultants

For professionals considering a career in consulting, Ibarra believes the most important skills go beyond technical competence.

“Listen carefully to your clients and understand their goals,” he advises. “Consulting is about helping people solve problems that matter to their organizations.”

He also emphasizes the importance of empowering teams and encouraging collaboration.

“Strong consulting teams succeed because they share ideas, challenge assumptions, and work together toward solutions.”

Adaptability, he adds, is another essential quality in a rapidly changing business environment.

“Continuous learning is critical. The business landscape evolves quickly, and consultants must evolve with it.”

The value of the CMC® designation

Ibarra’s commitment to professional excellence led him to pursue the Certified Management Consultant (CMC®) designation, one of the most recognized credentials in the consulting profession.

His decision was driven by two motivations: continuous learning and the opportunity to connect with other experienced consultants.

“The CMC journey requires dedication and discipline, but it pushes you to refine your skills and elevate your practice,” he says.

Preparing for the certification required balancing rigorous study with professional responsibilities—a challenge that demanded careful time management and persistence.

But the rewards have been substantial.

“Becoming a CMC has strengthened my credibility and expanded my professional network,” Ibarra says. “It connects you with a community of professionals committed to excellence in consulting.”

    Elevating the profession

For Ibarra, the CMC designation represents more than a credential.

“It is a symbol of commitment to ethical practice, professional standards, and continuous improvement,” he explains.

He encourages other consultants to view the certification journey as an opportunity for growth.

“Approach the process with openness and dedication. It will not only strengthen your skills but also contribute to raising the standards of the consulting profession.”

Ultimately, Ibarra sees consulting as a profession built on integrity, learning, and meaningful impact.

“Consulting is about helping organizations move forward with clarity and confidence,” he says. “When you help clients solve complex challenges, you create value that lasts far beyond a single engagement.”
