For Mark Anthony Galono, a Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP), the road to a career in HR wasn’t straight, easy, or expected—it was deeply personal.
“My journey into the HR profession began after a tough experience working in retail as a Sales Assistant at Puregold Commonwealth from 2016 to 2017,” Mark shared with Financial Adviser PH. “I saw how employees were overworked, underappreciated, and often treated unfairly. That eye-opening experience made me realize I wanted to be part of the change.”
At the time, Mark had to make a difficult choice: he paused his college studies due to financial struggles to help support himself. But that time in the workplace opened his eyes to the realities that many employees silently endure—unpaid overtime, minimal breaks, and the lack of basic respect.
“What inspired me to pursue HR was the mistreatment I witnessed. I didn’t want to be just a bystander—I wanted to help create better, more humane workplaces,” he said.
Determined to make a difference, Mark returned to school and earned his degree in Human Resource Development Management. That decision—rooted in empathy and purpose—became the foundation of his career. From Recruitment Officer to HR Officer, he steadily climbed the ranks, all while committing to personal growth and professional development.
“I’ve always believed in the mantra: ‘Don’t chase money, chase growth, and money will follow,’” Mark shared. “Investing in learning—through books, seminars, certifications—has always brought the best returns.”
His growth mindset led him to earn his CHRP certification and become a Certified Emotional Intelligence Practitioner. These achievements not only sharpened his technical skills but also deepened his emotional intelligence—essential for managing conflict, leading with empathy, and building trust in the workplace.
Mark also credits his involvement in the Philippine HR Group and free training seminars by Ariva Academy for shaping his mindset. Learning from respected HR professionals like Sir Darwin Rivers and Sir Jhun Delfonso gave him insight, motivation, and a sense of belonging in the profession.
“These communities made me realize that HR isn’t just about policies and paperwork—it’s about people, relationships, and creating workplaces where employees can thrive,” he said.
Beyond the office, Mark continues to give back. He teaches part-time as a college professor, sharing his experiences with students who are just beginning their journey. He also volunteers as an Instructor in the Leadership Development Program with the Philippine Red Cross, helping shape the next generation of leaders through service and resilience.
“Teaching and volunteering have helped me grow as a communicator and leader,” he said. “They keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of empathy in everything I do.”
Although Mark didn’t initially plan to enter HR, his lived experiences became the very reason he pursued it with intention. Every challenge, every setback, and every decision to keep going built the foundation for the purposeful career he leads today.
“I didn’t have it easy. I had to stop school. I saw things that made me uncomfortable. But I came back, and I built a career with purpose. That’s what makes it all worth it,” he reflected.
Today, Mark is not only an HR officer—he’s a mentor, educator, and advocate for ethical, people-first workplaces. His story is a reminder that you don’t need a perfect path to create a meaningful one.
