From Finance Operator to Enterprise Builder: What It Takes to Truly Stand Out

In today’s data-rich world, crunching numbers isn’t enough. To truly stand out in finance, professionals must evolve from data operators to enterprise builders—those who drive business strategy, not just support it.

Elmer Sarmiento, Certified Management Accountant (Australia), shared with Financial Adviser PH that today’s top candidates must go far beyond technical skills. “Someone who can see the bigger picture, whether enterprise or market level… it’s a trait that will not be automated,” he emphasized.

The finance function is no longer a back-office cost center. It’s now a forward-facing, insight-driven engine that supports strategic growth. And those who understand this shift will future-proof their careers.

Elmer is living proof of this evolution. While leading in corporate finance, he also lectures in risk management at institutions like AAFM and IFPM, and teaches at Ateneo de Manila’s John Gokongwei School of Management. This dual role—industry and academia—has only deepened his belief that finance professionals must learn to translate data into action.

“Finance people need to evolve into a ‘builder’ and not just a ‘user’ of enterprise data,” Elmer said. It’s a mindset shift—one that calls for strategic thinking, strong communication, and the ability to influence decision-making at the highest levels.

So, what does it take to shift from operator to builder?

See the whole system. Know how finance fits into operations, marketing, and strategy.

Keep learning. Elmer emphasizes continuous education, from technical certifications to hands-on experience.

Lead beyond the ledger. Whether you’re mentoring others or leading transformation, people skills are just as critical as spreadsheets.

    The bottom line:

If you want to stay competitive in today’s BANI world, think bigger. Finance is no longer just about reporting the past—it’s about shaping the future.
