Why Tronix Imaging Center Founder Ramon Castillo Left Intel to Build His Own Technology Company

For many engineers, landing a job at a global technology company is considered the pinnacle of career success. But for Ramon Castillo, founder and CEO of Tronix Imaging Center, his early corporate success was only the beginning of a much bigger ambition.

Long before he became an entrepreneur, Castillo had already built an impressive academic and professional foundation. He graduated from University of the Philippines, one of the country’s leading universities, with a degree in electrical engineering.

“I graduated from U.P., BS Electrical Engineering, in 1983,” he recalls.

After finishing his degree, he took the engineering licensure exam and achieved an outstanding result.

“Luckily, top five naman ako sa board exam.”

With strong academic credentials and technical training, Castillo soon began his career in the technology industry.

    “After that, I joined Intel.”

    Building technical expertise at Intel

Castillo’s first job placed him at the center of an environment where innovation and automation were part of daily operations. At Intel, he worked as part of an automation engineering group responsible for improving the efficiency of manufacturing systems.

“In four years, I was promoted to senior automation engineer,” he says.

Much of his work focused on solving a common challenge in automated production systems: connecting different machines so that they could work together seamlessly.

“Sometimes they have two automated machines, and they need a bridge between these two machines,” he explains.

Because the machines were often manufactured by different companies, the systems were not always compatible.

“And since this is made by another company, usually that bridge is not available.”

Without that connection, factory workers would need to manually transfer materials from one machine to another.

“So ang nangyayari, you have a fully automated machine, then they transfer it manually to this other company.”

Castillo’s role was to develop the technological “bridges” that connected those machines and eliminated the need for manual handling.

“So ang task namin as an automation group before was to develop those bridges, para wala nang tao na maglilipat pa ng output ng machine A to machine B.”

The experience gave him hands-on exposure to automation systems, problem-solving, and engineering design—skills that would later become valuable in entrepreneurship.

A bigger vision beyond corporate success

Despite the stability and prestige of his job, Castillo began to feel that his ambitions extended beyond the corporate environment.

“After four years, I had bigger dreams.”

For Castillo, the motivation to start a business was not driven solely by personal success. Instead, he was thinking about how technology could contribute to the country’s development.

“It’s funny, but a lot of people sometimes find it OA, but my dream has always been to help more Filipinos.”

He had also begun observing the economic dynamics between countries that developed technology and those that primarily consumed it.

“And I know that we can only upgrade our pay if we go into technology,” he says.

Castillo noticed that nations producing high-value technology products often enjoyed stronger economic advantages.

“The reason why a lot of first world countries are rich is because they’re selling us technology at a much expensive cost than what we sell back to them.”

That realization shaped his long-term vision.

“So sabi ko I wanted to put up a technology company in the Philippines.”

    From employee to entrepreneur

Leaving a stable corporate career to start a business is never an easy decision, especially when the job already offers advancement opportunities and professional recognition.

But Castillo believed that building a technology company locally could create broader opportunities.

Instead of remaining within the structure of a multinational corporation, he wanted to develop products and solutions that could be built and delivered by Filipino engineers.

His decision reflected a mindset shared by many entrepreneurs who transition from corporate careers to business ownership. The goal is not simply to leave employment but to create something that can grow beyond the limitations of a single role.

    Turning ambition into enterprise

Castillo’s decision to pursue entrepreneurship would eventually lead to the founding of Tronix Imaging Center, a company that would grow into a well-known technology and imaging service brand in the Philippines.

But the journey began with a simple realization: a successful career was not enough if it did not align with a larger purpose.

For Castillo, the real opportunity was not just to work with advanced technology—but to help build it in the Philippines.

His story highlights a pattern often seen among entrepreneurial founders: many leave corporate success not because they failed, but because they believed they could build something greater outside it.
