No KPIs, No Problem: How This HR Leader Is Redefining Performance Management

In today’s corporate world, performance often begins—and ends—with KPIs. But for Eden Manalo Uchayan, Certified Human Resource Professional, the traditional system doesn’t always fit.

“The performance evaluation here in our office—the KPIs are not applicable,” she told Financial Adviser PH. “That’s the next project actually.”

Eden isn’t just recognizing a problem—she’s preparing to lead a change. In a company where most employees have been around since the early 2000s, conventional metrics don’t reflect the nuances of their work, longevity, or value. Her mission now is to reshape performance evaluation into something more meaningful, relevant, and fair.

But that’s just one part of her day.

Eden’s current HR role is wide-ranging: she manages medical insurance across labor, staff, managerial, and dependent categories; oversees strategic recruitment for critical roles like engineers, architects, and department heads; and handles the daily concerns of employees—especially those in the lower ranks.

“All daily concerns of employees from lower positions are well taken care of,” she said. It’s this commitment to quietly serving others—without seeking recognition—that sets her apart.

“When they appreciate me for helping them and supporting them… I am not expecting any thank you or what, but they really appreciate.”

That simple appreciation from employees is what keeps her going. In a workplace that spans cultures, job levels, and departments, Eden believes in showing up—not with a checklist, but with empathy.

Her passion for both recruitment and employee relations reflects a values-driven approach. She doesn’t just fill roles—she builds relationships. She doesn’t just manage policies—she nurtures people.

And even though the tools aren’t perfect—yet—Eden’s leadership shows that performance management can be personal, not procedural.

Her next challenge? Designing a performance evaluation system that makes sense for her unique workforce. One that moves beyond one-size-fits-all KPIs, and instead, measures what truly matters.
