In tourism and hospitality, where expectations evolve quickly and guest experience defines success, professionals need more than technical expertise.

For Jhonnel Abalajon, Certified Hospitality Professional (CHP), the formula has always been clear: knowledge, skills, and attitude—or KSA—are what truly set a professional apart. These three elements have guided his growth through more than six years of industry practice, consultancy work, and academic involvement.

As Jhonnel explains, “Strong knowledge, skills, and attitude (KSA) are the foundation for success in this industry. Beyond technical expertise, having the right mindset and adaptability is equally important.” His perspective highlights a major shift sweeping across tourism today. The industry now values professionals who combine competence with character, and who bring both expertise and empathy into guest interactions.

Staying Competitive by Embracing Continuous Learning

Tourism is one of the most dynamic industries in the Philippines. New standards emerge. Guest behavior changes. Technology influences how services are delivered. Jhonnel stays competitive by continuously updating his knowledge base and building new skills—something he considers essential rather than optional.

He describes his approach clearly: “I remain competitive through continuous learning, training, and openness to feedback. I regularly engage in research, professional development, and networking to stay updated on emerging trends and best practices.”

This mindset reflects the kind of agility employers now look for. Professionals who evolve with the industry—not after it—are the ones who rise faster, deliver better results, and navigate disruptions with confidence.

The Career Advice That Changed His Approach to Growth

Mentorship plays a significant role in shaping Jhonnel’s professional values. Early in his career, he received advice that continues to influence how he works, leads, and interacts with others.

“My mentor once told me: ‘Be better than me; your success is also my success.’ This advice has inspired me to constantly strive for growth while uplifting others along the way.”

This philosophy drives the way he approaches collaboration and professional relationships. Instead of viewing others as competition, he sees colleagues and students as partners in shared progress. In a field like hospitality, this mindset creates stronger teams and better service.

A Focused Career Path Built on Passion and Purpose

Unlike many professionals who shift industries frequently, Jhonnel has stayed committed to tourism, hospitality, and academia. His consistency and dedication are part of what strengthens his credibility and expertise.

He explains, “I haven’t made a major career shift because I am deeply focused and passionate about what I do in tourism, hospitality, and academia. My commitment to this field continues to fuel my professional journey.”

His focus has allowed him to build depth of knowledge, refine his craft, and become a resource to both students and professionals who want to understand the realities of hospitality work.

What Makes a Candidate Truly Stand Out Today

Experience alone is no longer enough. Jhonnel believes that standout candidates combine practice with creativity and the ability to adapt.

He shares, “A standout candidate combines extensive industry experience with innovative thinking. With over six years of industry practice and consultancy work in tourism and hospitality, I’ve learned that professionalism, adaptability, and problem-solving skills set exceptional candidates apart.”

This reflects the modern demands of the industry. Tourism professionals must not only know how to execute tasks—they must also anticipate guest needs, make informed decisions, and navigate unexpected challenges.

Future-Proofing a Career in a Rapidly Changing Industry

With trends shifting more quickly than ever, Jhonnel believes that staying relevant requires a willingness to embrace change and consistently upskill.

He advises, “To stay relevant, professionals must embrace change, upskill continuously, and remain updated on emerging trends and issues that shape the industry.”

For him, this means treating every year as an opportunity to grow. Professionals who remain curious, adaptable, and proactive are the ones who stay ahead—regardless of technological changes, industry disruptions, or global travel shifts.

What Young Professionals Can Learn From His Journey

Jhonnel’s story shows that long-term success in tourism comes from more than experience. It comes from a combination of strong knowledge, consistently improved skills, and the right attitude toward service and growth. His commitment to continuous learning, openness to feedback, and passion for the field demonstrate the qualities that make professionals future-ready.

His journey is a reminder that hospitality will always favor those who learn widely, work humbly, and show up every day with the mindset of someone committed to growth.
