When Fernando De La Torre, Certified Hospitality Professional, looks at the state of the tourism and hospitality industry today, he sees a field that’s evolving faster than ever—shaped by technology, global disruptions, sustainability pressures, and shifting guest expectations. But for him, none of these changes alter the foundation of what it means to succeed in this line of work.

His career spans both industry practice and academia, and he’s seen how the strongest professionals aren’t just the ones with polished technical skills. They’re the ones who can adapt, learn continuously, and lead with values—even when trends shift overnight.

“Technical knowledge must be paired with character, empathy, and problem-solving skills. The industry demands not only competence but the ability to serve with a heart.”

It’s a mindset he brings into his classrooms as a Hospitality and Tourism Professor, reminding students that service excellence starts long before they enter a hotel or a tour site.

He stays competitive by treating learning as a lifelong responsibility

Fernando has always believed that the moment a professional stops learning is the moment they start falling behind. The industry moves too quickly, and he refuses to get left behind.

“I stay competitive by continuously learning—attending seminars, pursuing higher studies, collaborating with industry practitioners, and integrating global trends into my teaching. The industry never stands still, so I model lifelong learning for my students.”

He studies technology trends, sustainability practices, and global service innovations, not because they’re buzzwords, but because they’re shaping the tourism workforce his students are joining. Staying updated is his way of honoring the industry he teaches.

A piece of advice shaped his entire career: lead with values

Fernando credits one message for guiding nearly every decision he’s made.

“The best advice I’ve received is: ‘Lead with values, not just with skills.’ It reminded me that in tourism and hospitality, people remember not just what you did, but how you made them feel.”

For him, it’s not enough to meet standards. True professionalism is rooted in integrity, excellence, and genuine care—values he says matter even more in an industry built on the human experience.

His biggest pivot came with a challenge: making theory come alive

Like many hospitality professionals, Fernando began his career in the field. But moving from industry practice to academia was a major turning point—one that required a different skill set entirely.

“Transitioning from industry practice to academia was a major pivot. I struggled at first to adjust my industry experience into structured teaching strategies. The challenge was making theory alive and practical for students.”

At first, the classroom felt unfamiliar. But mentorship and training helped him transform his real-world expertise into teaching methods that connect students to the realities of the industry. He eventually learned how to bridge theory and application, turning a challenge into one of his strengths.

Why he believes humility and passion matter more than a perfect résumé

Unlike some industries where certifications or technical mastery dominate hiring decisions, Fernando believes hospitality success is built on something deeper.

“A standout candidate embodies professionalism, service excellence, adaptability, and passion. Technical competencies are important, but humility, resilience, and the willingness to go beyond expectations make someone truly shine.”

He’s watched countless young professionals grow—and the ones who excel are those who stay grounded and remain open to learning. Skills can be trained. Attitude can’t.

Future-proofing a hospitality career starts with embracing change

Many professionals fear the rapid digitalization of hospitality—AI-assisted check-ins, smart tourism systems, online concierge tools. But Fernando sees these innovations as an opportunity, not a threat.

“The key is to embrace lifelong learning, digital literacy, and sustainability. Professionals must anticipate trends, such as smart tourism, eco-friendly practices, and AI-driven service tools.”

But he reminds students that technology, no matter how advanced, can’t replace the essence of the industry.

“Technology may evolve, but character never goes out of style.”

It’s the combination of digital readiness and strong values that will define the next generation of hospitality professionals.

A career built on values and continuous growth

Fernando’s journey—from industry professional to educator—reflects what the tourism and hospitality field now demands. The industry rewards those who adapt, who learn continuously, and who uphold the values that make service meaningful.

His story reminds students and professionals alike that credentials matter, but character carries a career farther. In a sector defined by constant change, it’s the people who keep learning—and keep serving with integrity—who build careers that last.
